IATA Certification Course

Treider Fagskoler has been an Authorized Training Centre for IATA since 1985, and is responsible for this certification which is recognized all over the world. This examination was started in 1972 and has been developed in cooperation with IATA (International Air Transport Association) and UFTAA (United Federation of Travel Agents’ Associations), airlines and world organizations of travel agents.

The examination is administered by IATA’s head office in Montreal in Canada, and the examination itself is held at Treider Fagskoler’s premises. The exam tests the candidate’s knowledge of price-calculation, ticket systems, world geography, codes and the rules and regulations that govern the travel business. This is an education first and foremost for those who want to work at an airport, for an airline or in a travel agency.

Every  IATA recognized travel agency must have at least one employee who has passed the IATA/UFTAA examination. Therefore this qualification will give you a competitive advantage when you apply for positions in this line of business.

On passing this examination you are awarded the title DTTF – Diploma in Travel and Tourism Foundations. Although no previous knowledge is required for this course, it is an advantage if you have a good command of English, geography and basic mathematics.

The course is taught in Norwegian, but all the books, cd's and the examination are in English.

A Unique Education

All candidates throughout the world take the same course and by successfully completing the examination candidates receive a Diploma which is recognized internationally. The focus is not on one particular area but work with the whole world as a “market”.

The emphasis is on calculation of international airline tickets, world geography and general travel agency requirements.

This qualification is useful throughout the world and candidates gain an expertise which gives them good employment possibilities in the tariff department of a travel agency or an airline.

What is IATA/UFTAA

IATA (International Air Transport Association) is the global organization for airlines and has represented, managed and developed the aviation industry for over 60 years. Today about 230 airlines are members and these represent about 93% of international air traffic. Among other things, IATA regulates pricing of flights all over the world and sets the standard for how air traffic should operate, among other things, in accordance with  regulations and prices. All airlines which are affiliated to IATA must follow these regulations. IATA also works for the safety of passengers and goods as well as ensuring that airlines are financially stable.

UFTAA (United Federation of Travel Agencies) is travel agencies international organization which sets the standard for how travel agencies should deal with their suppliers and customers. The organization is also responsible for holding courses and training employees in the travel business and have, among other things, developed this course. All the material has been produced/developed by people with experience from this line of business and it is being continually up-dated by IATA’s head office in Montreal.

There are about 240 ATC(Authorized Training Centers) in the world and as one of these our aim is to offer a course at a high educational level which will give participants a good grounding to pass this examination.

Certification has previously been part of a two year course. However a change in demand has lead to us offering this course as a separate course in the evening. One reason is that we would like to be able to offer this course to those who are already working, but who wish to formalize their competence. We have positive experience of students with unique experience from the business.

Information about the IATA certification course

This year we will be starting two courses, one in March (with the examination in September) and one in September (with the examination in March).

The course is run with one instructor/teacher one afternoon a week. Students must be prepared to spend time working with the material and doing exercises/assignments on their own. It will be possible to contact the instructor by mail throughout the course..

The course is divided into two main areas:

Part 1 is an introduction to general travel agency procedures; service and dealing with customers, geography including airport codes, hotels, cruise, car-rental, train and travel/itinerary planning.

Part 2 covers in detail, tariffs and price-calculation, how an airline ticket is put together, changes and cancelations as well as covering  rules, regulations and restrictions. In addition there is an introduction to the Amadeus reservation system (via IATA’s CD which is included in the course material)

We recommend participants to structure their studies to allow time to work with the IATA material on a regular basis throughout the whole study period. The curriculum is demanding/extensive, but most students find it interesting and useful and are inspired to learn more as the course progresses.
